SPRING CHALLENGES AT THE SANCTUARY
/by Kevin Weil, Facilities Manager
As the snow melts and the first buds of spring begin to emerge, we enter a time of change, renewal, and, yes, challenges. While spring is a time of hope and growth, it also presents a unique set of hurdles. Every season brings its own rhythm, but we still have a lot to learn about our new property!
The Transition to Warmer Weather
After the long, harsh winter months, the shift to warmer temperatures can be both a blessing and a challenge. While the residents eagerly embrace the sunny days, the sudden rise in temperature can also trigger health concerns. The transition period can be stressful for older or more vulnerable residents, particularly those who have spent the winter in a more controlled, warm environment. The warmer weather means new risks such as heat stress and dehydration. The sanctuary team must be vigilant, ensuring the residents’ comfort and safety by providing ample water, shaded areas, and sunscreen where necessary.
Mud, Mud, and More Mud
Perhaps one of the most well-known—and dreaded—features of spring on a farm sanctuary is the mud. As the snow melts and the rain falls, the ground turns into a slippery, muck-filled mess. This means a lot of extra work for our team as we contend with boggy paddocks, muddied shelters, and the challenge of keeping our residents safe from injury. With many of the residents eager to roam outside, the soft, wet ground can create hazardous conditions, especially for those with mobility issues. Our staff works tirelessly to manage the muddy conditions by scraping away mud, adding gravel, and using rubber mats to help keep areas dry and safe.
Feeding Challenges and Rising Costs
Spring is an unpredictable time for the food supply at the sanctuary. After a long winter of rest, the pastures are just beginning to green, but the growth is slow and uneven. Until the fields fully recover, we depend heavily on stored hay and feed, which can be costly. The rising prices of feed and other essential supplies pose an additional challenge, making the financial strain on the sanctuary even more pronounced. Managing resources efficiently while maintaining high-quality food for our residents is a delicate balance that requires careful planning and budgeting.
Looking Ahead with Hope and Resilience
Despite the challenges, spring remains a season full of promise. Each day we see our residents recover, grow, and flourish in their newfound sanctuary, and there is a sense of collective resilience that keeps us moving forward. Our team remains dedicated to making sure that every resident, no matter the hardship, has the best chance at a peaceful, healthy, and fulfilling life. Spring at the sanctuary is a reminder of the beauty and strength that comes with perseverance—both from the animals and from the compassionate people who care for them.
As we face the challenges of the season, we are filled with hope for the future. It’s a season of growth, renewal, and transformation—not just for the land but for the residents and the sanctuary. Together, we navigate the mud, the rising costs, and the weather knowing that every challenge overcome is a testament to the strength of the sanctuary’s mission and the unwavering bond between us and the residents.
