Special Bond - Susan and Doug
/
“He just stole my heart!”
Our amazing volunteer, Susan…or as we affectionately call her, “Tuesday Sue”, has a very special bond with resident cutie-sheep, Doug. It was love at first sight between Susan and Doug as she was instantly drawn to his relaxed, endearing gaze. “He just stole my heart,” says Susan. “I can’t help it. Doug is just ridiculously adorable! He’s like a big, cuddly Teddy bear!” Susan can go on and on about her love for Doug with his fluffy white face that feels like the softest velvet. Susan is particularly drawn to Doug’s sensitive nature and laidback attitude towards life. “Doug has a humble heart,” Susan muses, “but he is also strong and protective of his brothers and his flock.” And he loves a good sunset!
Susan typically volunteers for our evening shift, so she gets to give Doug his bedtime snack. “He’s a huge apple slice lover, a gentle carrot stick nibbler, and a happy hay muncher. He is also pretty excited to eat a HEEFS handmade med ball, which we give him to support a long and full life.”
Having been a volunteer with HEEFS since 2018, Susan has had many wonderful evenings with Doug, but one in particular is extra special to her. “One evening, about two years ago, a caregiver and I walked out into the pasture and everyone, including Doug, was running zoomies around us,” Susan remembers. “It was like they were asking us for 10 more minutes to enjoy the warm summer evening! But once all the sheep and goats were safely in their cool, clean barn, Doug peered up at me with that same endearing look that melts my world, and he let me scratch under his fuzzy chin and kiss him goodnight. We now have this same bedtime routine almost every time I am there. Kindness saved Doug’s life and I feel he is thanking us at the end of each and every one of his days at HEEFS.”
