Meet the moms of HEEFS

If you look at the calendar, Mother’s Day is just one day a year. But at HEEFS, we have so many wonderful moms to celebrate that we like to give them a special snout out that lasts for the whole month of May!

Meet Catherine and George

This mother and son “dynamic duo” arrived at HEEFS in March of 2015 from a failing farm and quickly settled into their forever home. George, a self-proclaimed “mama’s boy” is never far from mom, Catherine’s, side whether they are playing, eating or just enjoying a relaxing snooze in the sun. Being goats, and therefore the natural-born comedians of the animal world, Catherine and George never fail to make everyone smile with their silly hijinks and their loving, inquisitive nature.

Meet April and her piglets

When April arrived at HEEFS, we were not 100% sure that she was pregnant, however she solved that little mystery for us very quickly when she gave birth that a few nights later…on April 1, 2015. Even though the “April Fools” jokes ran rampant throughout the Sanctuary, these little bundles of joy were no joke! They may be five years old now, but April’s babies will forever be known to everyone at HEEFS as “The Piglets”. More formally, they are called Brindle, Hercules, Tim, Peggy and Mercy. And even though Mama April is black from snout to tail, her children each have very distinctive markings and larger-than-life personalities.

Meet Fiona and her piglets

You would think that after April and her piglets were born at HEEFS, we’d be experts at spotting pregnant pigs. But Fiona fooled everyone! This is probably because she was most likely only a few days, or even hours, pregnant when she arrived at HEEFS. It wasn’t until 115 days later on October 4, 2018, that her beautiful babies made their way into the world.

Fiona had most likely given birth many times in her life before being rescued by HEEFS. But this time is very different. For the first time in her life, Fiona is able to watch her piglets grow up and live their lives surrounded by love. Fiona’s nine piglets, Benjamin, Audrey, Bradley, Iona, Helen, Winnifred, Penelope, Robert and Zeke are simply a delight. And watching mom, Fiona, with them is such an honour for us. She is patient, loving and tough when she needs to be. All the qualities that make up an amazing mom.
