What's In a Name Part 2!

Back in our June newsletter we gave you the inside scoop on how Nancy, James, Walter, Summer, Jolene and all of Fiona’s piglets got their names. In this issue, we’ll let you know how we came up with the names for Bobbie, Lenny, Captain Dan, Gladys and Luanne!

Our naming process can take a lot of different paths from working off of the name the resident was given prior to HEEFS to capturing a personality or physical trait of the resident. We also prefer human, and often biblical names and, sometimes, we just want to honour people in the world around us like when we chose the names Michelle and Obaaama for two of our sheep.

Bobbie

Or…as Derek affectionately calls her, Bobbie Girl, came to HEEFS with the name Marley. Any fan of reggae music can see where we’re going with this one! It must have been Bobbie’s laid back temperament and happy-go-lucky perma-smile that made us think of legendary music artist, Bob Marley.

Lenny

There’s no mistaking the floppy ears of our beloved Lenny who also can thank a legend of the music world for his freedom name. Lenny arrived at HEEFS with the name, Kravitz and, while it would be fun to say that his sense of rhythm and creative hairstyle choices earned him his name, the reality is that he simply looked like a Lenny! Sadly, Lenny left us in 2019 but his legacy lives on in Len’s Lenai - a special outdoor area designed for differently-abled residents, like Len.

Captain Dan

The Captain got his name in a roundabout way. When Dan arrived at HEEFS his name was Davito. This, of course, led us to call him Danny Davito which got shortened to just Dan and then we added the Captain ranking because, well…clearly he’s a Captain! (Also, Captain Dan gave us the same number of syllables as Davito, which we liked.)

Gladys and Luanne

These two lovely ladies came to HEEFS from Storybook Farm in 2015. They arrived at HEEFS without names but with some serious personalities and very deep “old lady” baaaaaas!

We immediately thought of names that had an old-fashion sound to them - perhaps popular in decades past, and that’s how we landed on Gladys and Luanne.
